Benzos are one of the most physically addictive drugs there are.
Withdrawal can literally be deadly.
His wife was near death several times for at least a year, if I remember correctly. Someone prescribed him kpins in the mean time to cope.
You'd think he would know of Akathisia Induced Impulsivity, but maybe he was just desperate.
Alcohol withdrawals sure do suck, Benzo withdrawals are supposed to be pretty similar. Also I believe sedatives like benzos, barbiturates, and alcohol are the only withdrawals that can actually kill you. While opiate withdrawals take way longer to get through the won't kill you. I'm pretty sure the physical withdrawals of the sedative stuff lasts only a week but opiates take over 3+ weeks. Alot of people know it's a horrible idea to put themselves in that kind of position, but are so desperate to get themselves out of their misery short term.
