Back in the dial-up BBS days, we had to shorten sentences into acronyms and figure out a way to convey emotion via text. Reading someone's tone of voice is impossible.

Emoji serve a purpose. But, as when pointed out, you add 50 clapping emoji after every sentence you should be taken outside and slapped around.
Technically, ;-) is an emoticon, not an emoji. I don't really have an issue with emoticons for the reason you specified.
Emoji's are the stupid graphic icons smartphones made so popular.
