It makes sense for it to be this way, at least from an evolutionary perspective.
A man could theoretically father a nearly unlimited amount of children, if only he could impregnate enough women. Stick the dick in, ejaculate, call ya later. He doesn't necessarily have to stick around to father the child.
A woman, on the other hand, has to endure nine months of pregnancy, followed by 15 to 20 years of care, depending on the mother and circumstances.
