Live way out in country, dog is a stray that just showed up. Man I can tell the difference in his barks. Like what he means. Just got the snake bark and killed a copperhead on the porch.

I can even see when he is smelling snakes in the woods, now we all know the biblical but why would a dog have a fear of snakes innately?

Venomous, aggressive creatures are easy to fear.

Honestly a copperhead isnt likely to strike unless you step on it. Still on my porch I might. Now a water moccasin is a whole nother story, those bastards will come after you.

Yes, water moccasins are very territorial

I almost gifted a boat to one once. Ended up killing it, but first I flailed about like a school girl for a time.

Territorial my ass! They want all of it.

I don't even like regular terrestrial moccasins.

My dog saved me from stepping on a copperhead when I was <10yo, was never trained to do so and had never encountered one. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's part of the reason they've earned the "man's best friend" label.

Fuck, I wish our current dog was more like that.

But she's the wife's dog, really; and she's a lazy bitch who just doesn't listen or obey.

Well, that dog didn't listen or obey either, but I didn't know how to train it and my parents didn't care to.

Why can't you have another dog? Shouldn't you have one of your own? Unless you're not home much of course.

I'm not home that much, it is true. And when I am here, one of the cats is very loyal to me, so at least I have her. I swear, I'd just stay on the boat and drink myself to death if it weren't for this cat sometimes.

Don't tell anyone, though, that makes me sound like a crazy person.

Also, most of the times everything is much better here, but tonight I am just disgusted with both the missus and my mother in law; they're being obnoxious for some reason. I AM ALLOWED TO BE EMO!! IT'S THE WEEKEND or something. I guess I just need a honky tonk song, a cold cold beer, a hardwood floor, and a smokey atmosphere. Or something.

He might have had a run in with a snake at one point, maybe got bit, and just knows they can be dangerous.

Nah, he was young when he showed up. He just knows, even after dead he wants nothing to do with them. You sound like a cityboy?

Yeah it can be instinctive, too, but I've seen domesticated animals not responsive to threatening wildlife until they experience an incident. Not really a city thing because snakes are in cities as well, but I guess I have lived a little bit in the city and in the country as well.
