How many people did you see shitting on the street?
For a short portion of the trip, I stayed with a friend in Berkeley, which was quite nice, despite being full of youthful Communists.
We subsequently took BART into the Mission, in San Francisco.
I'm from Philly. I know terrible neighborhoods. I currently live in a terrible ghetto, next to a bad subway stop.
But, outside of India, I've never smelled as much piss and shit as that BART stop in San Francisco.

I did like the mission district there a little last time I was there, lots and lots of years ago.It reminded me of Los Angeles, only more anarchist, which didn't seem to mean the same thing in the early 90s than it does now...
