I'm a motorcyclist that lane splits, and probably rides too enthusiastically for my own good.
We're not telling you to do anything that you shouldn't already be doing. You should be checking your mirrors and indicating prior to changing lanes; you should dip your high beams when there's an oncoming vehicle; you should not dump your rubbish on the road. And you should look for things crossing your path before pulling out onto a road: be it another car, a road train, a person, a bicycle or even a motorcycle. If you don't drive like a Muppet, the messages aren't aimed at you.
That over with, the statistic is that something like 90% of motorcycle accidents happen within the rider's field of vision. So close the 90% of accidents are completely avoidable with good roadcraft and cautious riding. Unfortunately, other cars not driving properly are the main problem for riders that do take all the precautions.
Finally, the problem with THOTs and that whole promiscuous culture is that it ends with welfare queens and bastard children. If there was no welfare, I couldn't give two fucks what or who they fuck, as long as no-one else is paying for their mistakes. You could argue that Motorcycle accidents are more expensive to insurance companies, but that's their choice to insure that group, and your choice to use that company. The other argument is when you need to get mandated state personal insurance (Vic Australia's TAC), but your problem there is mandatory personal insurance in the first place.
What happens to the riders without insurance? Or who cripple themselves and have to live off welfare the rest of their lives because they can't work? Same principal applies.
I'm not sure about other places, but in Victoria Australia it's Incorporated into motorcycle registration, so you MUST buy it, cannot buy an alternative, and it makes it even more expensive than a car. That provides for you if you cripple yourself.
I agree with you though, regardless of if you cripple yourself on a bike, or shit out a fucktonne of kids, you shouldn't get any welfare.
The common, root, problem is welfare. Always is, always has been.
