Maybe it's time to shrink the larger states like texas california and new york based on population densities. Hell I would love to see California as 3 states, bottom top middle and maybe eastern as a 4th.

The real should also involve part of Canada, not just Washington/Oregon. Here is on TvTropes (it's like Wikipedia, but for collecting and categorizing works of fiction).
If I ever were to "balkanize" the USA I would make sure these 3 become their own countries: 1 Utah (rename it to Deseret or whatever) as a Mormon theocracy; 2 Some black and/or Native American nationstate (so they can prosper, or fall, on their own without Whites or Jews to blame) and Cascadia (deport all the enviromentalists there).
But of course that map and the article were about federalization, not outright dividing it into sovereign nations.
