theyre unicode characters not spaces, you'll need to make sure chars are within range

I was wondering about that myself on how you did it. I though alt key codes at first not realizing it's unicode characters until now.

I thought alt + 255 / alt + 32 / alt + X (forget now) - SPC - all spaces.

but those are spaces and that makes sense now.
