Ha! Made me lol!
Seriously, since he is 99% checked out, why even bother with logs at all? For what? No one can see them but him. Just point all logs to /dev/null and he can get back to whatever he is doing.
I would even recommend it to him, but he is never on Voat / doesn't respond to more than a handful of posts every month....
LOL I almost always get a response from him IF I time it well. Like, when the site comes back online and he posts his thread saying the problem, I'll comment and he usually responds to me.
I'll try to remember to slip in a suggestion to just ship 'em to /dev/null - though encrypting them and tossing them up on dropbox is probably the solution I'd consider. Shit, I think their API even supports auto-rotation.
I ain't even a programmer.
Well, I ain't even a good programmer. I've been known to smash the keyboard and then use the results, something for which I find myself still apologizing.
Don't get me wrong, redirecting to /dev/null is NOT good solution unless you really just don't give a fuck at all anymore. Would prevent the full hard drive problem! Your solution is much better, but would probably involve WORK you know?
I don't know what platform Voat even runs on, but damn, how hard would it be to cron job a log rotation script that pipe the log through gzip then zeroes out the old one?
The transfer to Linux did not go well and my understanding is that it's reverted to Windows hosting (it's in Azure's cloud servers - but they do offer Linux and support Linux) and it relies heavily on .NET and that leaves mono or .net core as options and they're not feature complete nor do they have parity.
Again, I have programmed but I'm not a programmer. Please forgive me for any mistakes I may make. I have also hired good programmers and great IT staff. I was also smart enough to shut the fuck up and listen to them. After all, if they couldn't do it better than me, why the hell would I hire them?
IT and programmers were made of sterner stuff back then! However, I digress! (As I'm wont to do...)
Which leads me to...
Come the fuck on! I'll write it for 'em in Perl! If you gimme a minute, I'll write that bitch in C. It should take a good programmer maybe an hour! Maybe! (It'll take me three days, won't work, and that doesn't include testing - which it should - and will include about 10,000 lines of comment as compared to six lines of code.)
Shit, I'll give somebody on Fiverr a 10 spot to write it - it'll be done this after-fucking-noon. Then I can claim all the glorious credit and pretend I did it! (I'd never do that.) Still, it's not complicated. This is the kind of shit I can look right the fuck up on StackExchange - which is exactly what the guys on Fiverr are going to do.
Fuck, I can post it to the GIT page and submit a pull request - and I've never even used GIT for more than swearing at it and reverting to the damned GUI.
In other words, I have no fucking clue what I'm doing - but I'm pretty balls out positive I could figure this out. (It's gonna take a minute and break stuff - and I wouldn't let me do it.)
