If cannot drink the water, you are in a shithole.

If you are surprised to see a toilet seat on a public toilet, You are in a shithole.

If you order lunch and they charge you less than $1 American, you are in a shithole.

If you go through airport security and not only do you not have to take your shoes off, but they don't even have an x-ray machine for your bags, you are in a shithole.

If you can hand a local a $5 bill because they did some minor chore for you and they spend the rest of they day glued to you as your personal servant, you are in a shithole. (I gave him a second $5 at the end of the day and I made his month)

If there is a little trashcan by every toilet to throw your toilet paper in because flushing it will destroy the plumbing, you are in a shithole.

Shitholes can be awesome to visit but I could never live like this.

The really depressing thing is that fixing these problems is really easy. The folks I am visiting bought a place down here and gutted it and renovated. They literally spent an extra $1500 during the reno because they told the contractor "We want to be able to drink the water and we want an American septic system that we can flush anything down." ... One hole house RO water filter and an actual septic system (rather than just a leech field) and we are back in modern civilization.
