I would disagree with Gab, duckduckgo, startpage, Brave and whatever the last one is. For Twitter it would have to be Minds, Mastodon, and Pleroma. For Google Search it would have to be SearX. For both Chrome and Firefox, just use a Firefox fork/derivative, like Waterfox and Librefox, which are the two best forks of Firefox at the moment.
Interesting. Could you elaborate on the positives of Minds in particular, and why Gab, Duckduckgo and Brave are not that good? (or at least point me to good info on that, as I am beginning this “alternative” free speech/privacy thing lol)
Gab: it's code is proprietary, and the owner opposes decentralization.
Free alternative to Gab: Minds, Mastodon, and Pleroma, because they are all open source.
DuckDuckGo: It's servers are proprietary, and the company has recently partnered with Apple to provide maps in DuckDuckGo(that's a red flag), and it tracks you: https://www.stoutner.com/new-default-homepage-and-search-engine/ https://archive.is/qntuk
Free alternative to DuckDuckGo, Bing and Google Search: SearX, because it's open source and it truly promotes privacy.
Brave: Yes it is open source, but it's based on Chromium, which only strengthens Google's Monopoly. They also are more focused on advertisements and monetization rather than actual privacy. The browser increases browser fingerprintability, making it even more fingerprintable than Microsoft Edge, which is ironic since it blocks fingerprinting trackers. Its built-in adblocker doesn't block all ads on default(like Adblock Plus), a better adblocker would be uBlock Origin which blocks ALL ads on default.
Free alternative to Brave and Google Chrome: Waterfox and Librefox, since they are open source and are not chromium-based, and have Firefox telemetry disabled.
Good points indeed. Thanks a lot! (the last one I learned is Comodo Icedragon btw)
