For example, very few people hate black people *because* they are black. Meaning, the color of their skin, per se, isn't the reason why people don't like blacks. People don't like the characteristics that are often associated with blacks, such as violence, lower IQ, etc. But, to judge an individual based on traits associated with the group is racist. For example, to say "I hate blacks because they're all violent." This is just stupid, there are obviously many blacks who aren't violent.
