Our homeowner's association required all residents to install new front porch lights by a certain date. I came outside and saw a 12 year old boy I didn't recognize from a different part of the townhouse complex struggling to install a neighbor's light. He knew all the right connections to make and how it went together yet was still struggling to do it by himself. I walked inside and got some picture/bailing wire and showed him to use it to hang the light while he connected the wires.

I just wanted to share the story b/c it gave me hope for the future. This lil dude printed up flyers and had 40+ jobs lined up b/c he printed flyers and underbid some local handyman. At $25 a pop for a job that takes you minutes once you know what you're doing... this kid is going places. Some other local guy wanted $30.

entirely agree. during the great recession, I read many stories of employees that had stayed at company for 15-19 years were let go so they would not get pensions or extra benefits for staying 20 years.

Yep. That doesn't surprise me.

Honestly though, I'm against government intervention in this stuff. If you want a pension, you should negotiate that at the start of your contract, not have it be something granted to you because government said so.

If you're good, it makes sense for a company to offer you a long term contract rather than short term, and it's up to those two parties to negotiate the terms of employment.
