He spent 12 days doing it but to walk 20 miles to the nearest town takes 5 hours, in the dessert, maybe double the time??

If it was really hot, just walk at night and shelter during the day (dig a fucking hole if you want and just have a kip in a fox hole). You'd probably walk it in one night, unless it was bad terrain or loose sand, then it might take a couple. Whole thing sounds fake as fuck. He had a hacksaw, did he have spanners, socket set, screw drivers, pliers, etc.? He'd need a drill at least. The bent scrap of metal that he's using to fix one side of the drive differential would need to have two holes drilled in it to go through the studs. Not sure why you wouldn't just put the wheels on there and make some sort of trike setup, would seem easier to me.
