section 230 gives facebook and twitter power over you at your expense. That's insane. That would be like the govt mandating vaccines and then giving big pharma an exemption from any liability for killing people.

No it doesnt. 230 clearly says they are doing what they should not if they want their 230 protection. However the status of being big and powerful means they can blatantly ignore that and pretend it protects them anyway.

Long story short it is a hot mess and the blame is ultimately at the feet of the government that happily allows it to continue.
