This isn't accurate. They have free energy systems available to them, and they can print gold using radioactive mercury and particle accelerators. Actually, the very fact they can print gold is sufficient reason why gold can never work as a currency.
I haven't even considered synthesis, if the price of gold skyrocketed it could make it viable.
I'm skeptical of free energy, especially at small scale.
It's not entirely free; but molten salt reactors can pretty much make unlimited energy for decades, even centuries. Compared to today's energy prices, it is free.
Never heard that one. What makes you think they can make gold?
Because you can turn one element into another with particle accelerators. The energy costs are high, but it can be done. If those energy costs can be mitigated using 1940's molten salt reactor tech, then they can just print gold. It will still take time, but if you have enough reactors going, you can create a limitless stream of printed gold.
