The groundwater thing hits close to home. Before buying my house I rented another on a well. Shit went dry after 20 minutes. If you wanted to wash some clothes AND take a shower you were screwed.

Meanwhile, my grandpa is in Illinois, and has a pond on his property. If it gets low he tosses in a hose, connects it to the well and lets it runs for a week or 2.

apparently, you can create underground aquifers by planting shit tons of tall grass.

rainwater harvesting is also an option (with natural filtration system).

If you have a stream through your property you can generate hydro-electric power.
