Guilds had a monopoly on all trades back then. Jews had no choice but to barter. 2: The intelligent people you refer to like Martin Luther did not hate Jewish people, they hated the Jewish religion. There is a lot of evidence to suggest in most of Europe once Jews converted to Christianity they were treated equally, like in Spain 1400s and other areas. They did not hate the Jewish Race they only hated the religion. Spain however did start to persecute the Christians who used to be Jews ( they were called Conversos ) but only because of superstitions.
