Here's the problem.
The coronavirus is part of a big group of viruses that all cause "the common cold": runny nose, chest congestion, cough, fever. Sure, we could dedicate millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours to develop a vaccine for the coronavirus specifically, but there's still like 200 other viruses out there that will give you a similar sickness, so what's the point?
Except now the media is really focused on coronavirus specifically. Oh no, it's a deadly disease, be afraid, etc. So suddenly it seems like a good idea to develop a vaccine for that specific virus, which they did. Will you still get the common cold? Yes. But not from coronavirus. Hooray, we did...almost nothing.

There's tons. You've probably had several in your lifetime. Think back to any time you got the sniffles - coulda been corona.
Our pets have it worse. Corona is way more problematic for dogs and cats. That's why we've been vaccinating them against it for decades. This isn't new. I worked at the vet for about 10 years and it was already standard when I started.

Viruses are not transmittable from person to person.

Even if the vaccine works for COVID-19, it might not be effective against the coronaviruses that cause the common cold.

What the media does or does not is pretty pointless. What the _scientific community_ is focused on right now is a SPECIFIC strand of coronavirus, named COVID-19, which IS deadly, far deadlier than the normal influenza virus. But what's even worse is not how deadly it is, but its tendency to send people to the hospital for weeks if not months. This will very soon and very fast clog our health care services making them incapable of dealing with ANY illness or problem you might have (be it cancer, car accidents, work accidents, etc) making something that is normally curable into something deadly just like it was before we had doctors who actually do understand what they are doing.
This is the big problem of this specific strand of coronavirus, and this is why a massive amount of money and research has been put into finding a cure.
So yeah, there are perhaps thousands of strands of coronavirus, but only very few of them are as deadly or as problematic as COVID-19, which is member of the SARS family, which is known to be highly lethal.

Viruses can't be cured. Diseases can.
Viruses can be prevented from causing diseases, that's what vaccines are for. They make your immune system aware of the threat and allow it to recognize the virus before it causes any damage to your body, hence preventing the disease.
SARS-CoV-2 is the virus, COVID-19 is the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. The vaccine prevents the COVID-19 disease from happening by stopping the virus (SARS-CoV-2) before it enters your cells.
