Cultish yes, not archaic necessarily although truth does not change with the centuries. Centralized governmental authority has increased in power & scope over history. I'm for decentralizing power, more power to states and communities and individuals. Democracy seems to be a voluntary transfer of power from the individual to the central authority. Maybe we should go back to feudalism or something?
