... or ADHD, or food allergies, or anxiety disorders, or homosexuality, or any of other crap our children are plagued with.

After seven months on pregnancy forums, I’ve determined this is a big fat lie.

Women today are taking all kinds of shit during pregnancy. Heartburn meds, extra vaccinations, popping Tylenol like it’s candy, high dose progesterone supplements. Oh, and that doesn’t include all the drugs that are taken these days to just get pregnant, like the massive amounts of hormones you use during IVF or IUI treatments, or Clomid to increase ovulation. Drinking during pregnancy is becoming more acceptable (because one bitch wrote a book), and apparently smoking weed your entire pregnancy is no big deal either. Most psychiatric drugs are cleared for use during pregnancy as well.

This is on top of all the birth control, drinking, bad eating habits, obesity, and anxiety meds women are on for most of their lives.

But no, nothing in the modern world causes autism. You constantly freaking out about your mother in law’s innocent bullshit, or your high stress job, or your advanced maternal age, won’t affect your baby at all. Nothing causes problems!

Indeed. How dare you come to your own conclusions!

Except for drinking during pregnancy. Like I said, some bitch wrote a book about how you should question that, and now it’s suddenly okay to drink.

While I appreciate the author’s basic idea of “do your own research,” humans are idiots and generally distill complex topics down to the most simplistic concept. A lot of women use this as a justification for drinking during pregnancy.

"Oster is the daughter of two economists, Sharon M Oster and Ray C Fair.[6] When she was two years old, Oster's parents noticed that she talked to herself in her crib after they left her room. They placed a tape recorder in her room in order to find out what she was saying, and passed the tapes on to a linguist and psychologist they were friends with. Analysis of Oster's speech showed that her language was much more complex when she was alone than when interacting with adults. This led to her being the subject of a series of academic papers which were collectively published as a compendium in 1989 titled Narratives from the Crib.[7] The book was reprinted in 2006, with a foreword by Emily.[8]"
