You have to have developed a written language in order to read or write. Apefricans don't have any written history themselves so why would they be able to teach Europeans how to read and write? Did they also teach the Europeans how to build non-mud-based dwellings and how to move things efficiently with wheels? No they didn't because they didn't advance to those levels on their own.
