I just saw on another website, which also allows storage of images and not just text, that their costs are $40 a month. How in the fuck does voat claim to not be able to support that site? He's always made it sound like it costs them an arm and a leg.
I'm beginning to suspect he might be an asshole
When the traffic hits a certain point, the costs start expanding rapidly. I know startups that pay 2 million a month in data processing and server fees.
Because the webshit ecosystem is a complete mess and it has no real engineers.
Can you estimate what a site like voat would cost per month?
I dont know, but potentially several k a month. I do know that I wouldn't like to pay that bill, especially after coding and maintaining the app.
It could also be poor (or not optimised) web design. If a request needs to query a whole database instead of a smaller daily table, that could lead to inefficient server utilization which would add to costs.
This is another reason that would make it hard to estimate.
