Nye's statement is a dad joke....has he gone more senile than he was?
That being said, almost all toothpastes (there are exceptions) are similar, same some use stannous fluoride vs the older sodium fluoride. The rest of the crap other than potassium nitrate (and that's kind of iffy as to it doing anything in a paste) does nothing. If your toothpaste has a fluoride component then it's as good as pretty much every other toothpaste on the market.
That's the reason a manufacturer, at least in the USA, can say it's the "best" - all of them are "the best" because they all have the exact same active ingredient. It's only when you say it's "better" you get into having to prove your claims.
