Perhaps plastic isn't as great a material as we once thought it was.
That depends on the plastic. An extremely tough, hard, plastic, like phenolic which is what the indestructible old-time pay phones were made out of, would have been a better choice. It's expensive though. Plastics like Polyethylene and ABS, among many lightweight ones, do break down slowly under UV light and aren't as tough in the elements as once thought.
Those last two you mentioned as far as I can tell are by far the most common used today. Due to them being cheap and recyclable.
