The only coffee shop open around here is a drive- thru, a small shack with a big roof near the highway intersection at the edge of town.
The drive- thru is inside the parking lot of our only strip mall, permitted solely because it was disjointed from the rest of the town by giant roundabouts and unsightly overpasses and generated a lot of tourist income being right off the exits of two highways.
The shop was built too close to the lot entrance and when the line of cars exceeds 5 or 6, people routinely line up back into the lot entrance, which then interferes with the boulevard traffic.
A few, more civic minded customers attempt to form a 2nd line perpindicular to the to drive in line at the next row away from the lot entrance. Then some fatass wearing a mask with the windows rolled up drives to the end of the first line and stops, completely blocking the entrance.
Now I understand the theory of zipper merging, and why cutting ahead in a 2nd lane can actually improve traffic when done correctly, but blocking a busy lot entrance to cut into a long drive thru line is just thug behavior.
Long story short, the other day I was the lucky customer to have to make the decision to back the road up or drive around the lot and form the 2nd line. I decided to make the 2nd line.
As I was idling in first 2nd line position, a black kid in a Beemer drives into the lot, windows down, and trap music playing loud. He pauses at the entrance, realizing and considering his options. He doesn't turn the music down. After a moment he drives through the gap I'd left between the lines to keep the lot entrance open, and continues up to my car, pulling right up to my window.
"Hey, this the line for <Coffee Shop>?" he asks me.
I give him a bit of jive back, telling him "yeh the line's goin back this way already". He nods and swings that Beemer around behind me.
Eventually I pass the gap in the line myself, and now the Beemer kid is holding first 2nd line position. A moment of trust in my leadership. We make eye contact through the rear view mirror as another strip mall customer passes freely through to another store.
As the line advances I pull as far ahead as I can into the artificial canyon of the drive thru itself. Homeboy in the bmw follows suit and safely harbors just past the channel. We see each other in the mirror one more time, and the we all got out coffee and left.
This all sounds like a leftist shit post but it did happen. The point is a little bit of leadership goes a long way and you might be surprised at who your friends could be.
