"What is the purpose of your life other than leaving a legacy. Other than proverbially planting a tree in who's shade you will never sit.

What else would you expect a father to say? The reason my dad is a great dad is because I know if it ever came down to it, he would sacrifice everything he has for my future, and I will never pay him back for that.

But I will pay it forward to my son."

Self-improvement— I see the leaving of a legacy as a byproduct of self-improvement. I'm the kind of person who believes that we do take something with us, when we die: our minds. Might as well put it to good use, while here. The real magic starts to happen when you realize that selflessness is just a meta form of self-improvement.
