How is it, that in a country with the strictest control over air-space, did this one flight manage to go off course let alone get that deep into NYC without F-16s being sent after it? Any plane goes off course by even a meter, there would be F16 fighter jets on its ass faster than you can say "fuck".

I don't think you can just "turn off" the transponder for that very reason

Oh you could back then and they did just that.

Either way, an expected arriving flight just disappearing off the radar would raise suspicion.

It did raise suspicions, as did flight 175 when it changed its transponder code.
