I'd say it's a commentary on crime and punishment w/ the expectation that punishment should fit the crime. We watch broke people get locked up for decades for weed sales while white collar criminals that steal millions get less time. Issues w/ repeat offender statutes on nonviolent crime need evaluation. Clearly crack distribution is more serious than pot... even still how is a crack dealers crime worth a decade plus while the wall street ass clown does a few months at club med? I'd argue stealing millions of dollars does at least as much harm to the overall public good as you're average dumbass crack dealer...

I'm actually arguing for greater sentencing for white collar crimes, and no jail time for Marijuana. People don't suck dicks for the devil's lettuce and if you've ever watched someone stoned outta their mind on pot drive they never reach the catostrophic speeds drunks hit. It's like driving miss daisy, but paranoid and struggling to do the speed limit for extended periods of time.

And of course on the surface a story about a returning vet who has trouble reintegrating. Great movie, one of many from 1967.
