If only. I was pretty well acquainted with the creator of Scott Pilgrim when he was a nobody hapa still in art school doing online comics up in Canada back in the late 90's early 2000's. When he put out the Scott Pilgrim comic with Oni press, all of us in our group were glad he was getting somewhere with it. He was definitely a hard charger in that regard, but when I read the first volume I had this eerie feeling that a lot of it was too biographical. Young virgin Canadian man meets a slightly older American gal who had a sizeable multi-ethnic notch count.
Looking back on it now, the fact that none of Ramona Flowers evil ex-boyfriends were black should've been a red flag for me to know how messed up the girl she was based off of was. I had to disappear off the radar for a few years, but during that time I got word he was in town for a convention. Figuring I had nothing to worry about at a comic-convention, I went to offer him my congrats on his success in person, but I missed him. He was having a bathroom or lunch break, I forget what, but I managed to meet his wife who was the spitting image of Ramona Flowers. It was then I had an almost cinematic realization that the Scott Pilgrim series was actually about the creator and his coping with the realization that the girl he was head over heels for, would later marry, never had kids with, and then divorce, was a slut.
Fascinating, thank you for sharing that. I enjoyed the movie from a cinematic perspective and it’s novel new style, but was disturbed by who he chose. This explains much.
Holy shit that's pretty sad.
Most people in the media fields are seriously mentally messed up, but cartoonists, animators, and comic books openly wrestle with their delusions in their work. Thing is, the people they work with encourage them to live them out, no matter what path that will set them on. I could name a few others I was acquainted with, but I'll drop round about hints. For example, the creator of Wet Moon who's currently working on the TMNT comic published by IDW. The personal life portion of their wiki profile should confirm the horrifying state of mental health among creatives.
