how did you manage to convince people to give up their smartphones? i recently gave up mine, but am having real trouble expressing to people the gravity of the situation. someone very close to me refuses to give theirs up, even though they are half aware of whats happening. they rely on being connected because they make their money catering to social media obsessed idiots. lets say this person is a dressmaker. even i have to admit that a smartphone is necessary to this person.
People are getting very anxious and it turns out that smartphones are an easy culprit to pin it on. Check . There are other stats as well. Basically, the constant dopamine feed and zoning into a small screen causes us to be hypnotized.
Human programming is very real, but most are not aware of it or don't want to believe it because they think they are too smart to be mind controlled.
So, when I have friends who are stressed the hell out, I show them such videos and recommend they just try to put their phone aside for large blocks of time and walk in nature. Once they see the benefits, some will tune into the problem. Most don't though, but appreciate the walks anyway. There are some phones out there like the Nokia 3150 which are 3g and are just phones with a camera.
Start with your wife (watch that video for example, or check out Jonathan Haidt's latest book on the matter). He's got a couple of TED talks as well. It's nice light information so easily digestible for "regular folk". Once you get better attention together, you and her can show anther close friend. This is what worked for me.
