It's not meant to be pessimistic. We are saved, because we see the way. Others will be too, but they will be compelled only upon crisis.

Consider the affirmation addiction (infantalization) is like being addicted to heroin. An addict must hit rock bottom to truly quit and forever after must seek eternal vigilance to stay sober. Not all can or want to quit.

In this way, the subversion of our culture provides affirmation at all angles. Being aware of that helps us avoid trading affirmation (such as gold) with virtue and enables us to also become shepherds.

good analogy! I've noticed this myself. if you pad their fall they don't bounce. they just shuffle along sideways at a new lower level.
