I'm not that good at explaining a lot of this stuff, but Latin was used purposefully as the original source for most languages in use today.
The way that English is used today is confusing because it's been so dulled. It used to be a masterful language, which is why it was corrupted (so early, too). The reason Latin matters is because it was a very powerful (multiple meanings) language. I've called it a "memetic" language before, which might sound like gibberish to you, but I can assure you it's extremely important. There's a reason so many institutions or other groupings use "mottos", or just random phrases in Latin.
Admittedly, I haven't gone as far as I should with this and although I can go a modest amount deeper in to this, I'm not going to be able to go far enough to make a meaningful impact unless you show a significant affinity for it.
and I understand that latin is the root for romance languages. I do know a bit. definitely not fluent. i'm a mechanic for shits sake, not an academic.
