I figure the path to true success is to do the exact opposite. this book wasn't written out of love and a desire to improve the lives of his fellow man. it was written to destroy.

Machiavelli was not really about being evil. It is a thought experiment and written not as a manual, but as entertainment. Like you are saying, to defend yourself from a psychopath, you must first understand one ... which in a way requires a bit of a mental + emotional journey. This is what you get with Machiavelli. It's an awareness manual. One could easily have written it in a boring, academic stance but it wouldn't have had the same punch to it.
