I recommend the book of the same name by Smedley Butler.

It's almost irrefutable that a centralized military is always going to end up as a major problem. The founders intended (through 2A) that military remain decentralized through militias and a sparse central command.

A centralized force always gets corrupted and perverted, just ask .
