I think it's because just about everyone else gets a flu shot. The chances of catching a virus that others don't have is slim. I skip getting a flu shot every other year, for that reason.

That could be part of it. But there have been numerous times I didn't take the flue shot, and it was only the people around me who took the shot who got sick. And I've known people who had a bad reaction who would have been better off not taking it. I can't say it never works at all, but I think it's overrated.

I think I remember reading that the actual success rate is less than 80%. So, 1 out of 5 people that were vaccinated caught the flu later. The people working these things up have to guess which strains will be the most common almost one year ahead of time. That's not an easy task. The nasal vaccine thing seems pretty useless.
