One advantage of Archive.Today over the Wayback Machine was its ability of bottomless scrolling on bottomless pages such as YouTube comment sections.
In 2016 and 2017, Archive.Today allowed archiving the conversations inside YouTube comments, including comment replies.
In around 2018, YouTube presumably made some technical changes to the comment system, and Archive.Today was now unable to archive YouTube comments through the bare URL.
But there was a partial workaround: One needed to append “&lc=1” to the URL, which bypassed the AJAX loading method and allowed archiving around 200 comments per video. However, Archive.Today could no longer include comment replies, except if one comment reply was hot-linked.
Less than a day ago, Archive.Today has pushed a new update to enable support for progressive web applications (e.g. Instagram).
A distinction is is that hyperlinks inside pages archived through the new method are no longer redirected through Archive.Today/o/, but the direct hyper link.
But their update had two side effects:
- Pages archived through the new method can not be downloaded as a .zip file on affected page. The download URL returns a “Not Found”.
- Comment archival: No more bottomless page scrolling (only archives first 20 comments), and comments longer than three lines can are pruned and only visible inside the HTML source code.
