He had alot of potential. He just fell in love with the wrong person. I mean, he pulled four guys off of her and got into a huge fight to protect her dignity.
Just imagine if he fell in love with the right woman and four guys ganged up on her and she needed his help, he would have thrown his life away to save her. He's mostly a beta because she saved his life and probably developed a savior/saved complex.
