Seems similar to my own experiences with Q-tards. They are generally looking for a reason not to feel inadequate about their intelligence, class, and station in life so they imagine that they're privy to "secret" knowledge that will vindicate their world-view in the end. Also by believing that powerful forces are working behind the scenes on their behalf, they are made more comfortable about their own undeniable lack of power. Most people regard coordinated hidden power with disgust and fear, which is almost always the appropriate response to it considering what it usually means to the people not in on the planning.
