I think its more complicated than this.
To pay somebody to build a home right now will cost about the same or, actually right now even more, than just buying a preexisting home.
Homes are fucking complicated in their materials and limited skills it takes the build them and time it takes, and appliances
People go brok just trying to remodel a section of their home.

Obviously it's faster and cheaper to build the same two floor plans for an entire neighborhood than do renovation, which is custom work.

thats true but doesnt take away from the obviousness that houses cost a lot of money because they cost a lot of money to build.
