The survival rates vary quite a bit based on what country you live in. “Tropical” countries have better survival rates than Europe or the US. This might be due to vitamin D levels in winter or the ability of the virus to survive in hot humid climates, who knows.

Mean Life expectancy is in the 70s for younger people because a lot of people die of suicides or car accidents or cancer in late middle age. But the median age of death in the US is like 88 or something. That is the most typical age at death which means that people in their 70s can expect to live till around 88. So people in their 70s who die of covid could be losing around 10 years of life. Some study said covid victims lost around 11 years of life on average.

Total deaths went up about 20% over the last year or so. That was almost entirely due to covid.
