When Colt made a nice looking pistol, they really made a nice looking pistols, but their ugly pistols were just atrocious.

Some models like the 1903, 1908, and 1911 look awesome by any standards, but judging by models like the 1902, 1905, or 1907 and you'd never guess Colt (or John Browning) would become all-time legends.

You mean that by their design or it was about machining processes and fit and finish?

I just mean the aesthetic appearance, particularly the grip angle. Some of the early Colts grips have an ugly angle which appears uncomfortable to shoot, almost straight up and down relative to the slide.
