Do you know how hard it is to actually travel THROUGH space? At any significant speeds debris will obliterate everything. Shielding? Powered shielding? Power by what? There isn't a power source feasible to enable a damn bit of space travel out of the solar system (at a useful sci_fi level not requiring generations to pass just to get somewhere...).
