There's 2 universes (so to speak) Warhammer, which is fantasy based (lord of the rings, game of thrones l, DnD) and Warhammer 40k which is scifi (Dune, starwars, startrek etc)

These books are set in the scifi universe, and are set 10,000 years before the current 40k setting (40k being the year 40,000)

The story in the tiniest nutshell is about a civil war between 18 gen-hanced humans (brothers) and their armies.

The Emperor of mankind created these 18 warriors as a means of expanding (conquering) the galaxy for humanity in what was known as the Great Crusade. To do so, he united humanity with the Imperial Truth(no such thing as faith, religion superstition, but only science and logic)

One of the brothers starts to uncover the truth about the universe and that the Imperial Truth was infact a lie. He then convinces Horus (who is appointed Warmaster in the absence of the Emperor) to turn against their father and thus the war began.

E: for fantasy, a mate at work has recommended the Gotrek and Felix series
