I'll argue that cities are not self sustaining, but require enormous resources to maintain. You can't grow food in them. Water needs to be piped in. Sewage needs to piped out. Electricity is usually transferred from long distances. These places are hardly self sustaining. Homes in the country, however typically have locally sourced water, septic systems, solar panels and gardens. You can be self sustaining in the country.
