I watched the full movie about this called “Tread”. I recall he had a clever way of gifting money to his siblings that kept it from being repossessed by the authorities. He gifted it to his dying father, who died before the rampage and passed it on to Marv’s siblings. After being handed off in an inheritance the authorities couldn’t touch it.
$7 million in damage, that guy stuck it to them. jewbucks, but it's what they care about.
All of the properties were probably insured though.
I don't understand why people idolize this guy. From what I've read about him, he was a totally unreasonable, rude asshole that ignored even reasonable property regulations, and was fined for things like dumping sewage.
He didn't even own the property for long, and initially agreed to a generous price for it. After he changed his mind, everyone bent over backwards to try and negotiate with him, even though he was a total dick to everyone.
It looked like he could have taken the payout and easily re-opened his shop anywhere else. Or retired comfortably. But instead he went nuts, destroyed a few buildings, and suicided himself.

That part of the story isn't generally told or made clear, so people see him as the victim/hero.
It seems to me it turned into a big pissing match. Hemeyer was very attached his property for some unknown reason. He had no obligation to sell it, and he was ultimately willing to die for it. I'm reminded ofthe Bundy Ranch vs BLM incident.
