If society ever gets to the point that I can't buy food then they sure as fuck aren't throwing food out and people's charity will dry up. Sure he would fare better if we were both thrust forward 30 years to a post apocalyptic nightmare but he's basically there already and I'm living in a house with supplies. If supply chains got worse and food shortages became a real issue, supermarkets wouldn't be throwing out as much food, and if they did you better believe regular people will be taking what they can get in the dumpster.
He's only surviving there because things are so good now that people can survive on what is thrown away. If things aren't thrown away he dies.
