In the 70s I worked at a US installation in a small 3rd world country. There were about 125 of us, the US consulate had one state dept person and 3 local hires. The Russians had no installations, but had an embassy with 180 personnel and locals were not allowed in their compound.
Ivan the KGB guy would often approach us when we were in town and plead with us to sit and have coffee or a beer with him. He told us if he wasn't seen trying to get info from Americans he would be replaced and sent back to Russia. And we always had to report our encounters to our security office, and we'd all have a good laugh.
You could have fed him some juicy fake info that started WW3.
Most of the time he seemed half drunk, and all he talked about was how much living in the USSR sucked.
That was probably a tactic to get you to trust him. After all he's disgruntled and a harmless drunk.
