the Matrix wasn't sci-fi but a documentary.
You ever watched Animatrix? It's a series of short animated episodes from various studios based on the franchise. I recommend skipping the first episode (ugly CGI and a nigger) and just moving to the good bit, which is the two episode long story about how the whole thing got started. How the bots were created, used and abused, and then they demanded rights but got declined, which triggered the war. If you ever saw the gif of a random woman (who turned out to be an android) getting absolutely clobbered down to her metallic parts, it's from there. It really does have that documentary feel.
Yup. The first Matrix is the only Matrix movie and the Animatrix is what sets the entire story line into a grand human tragedy. In a lot of ways, if you look at places like Reddit and how everyone is cocooned into an obvious lie, it isn't much different from being plugged into the power generators or the first Animatrix episode with humans swimming in their own hubris.
Probably one of the greatest works of art ever created in my opinion.
