The German way is to make an inefficient design work adequately through engineering. Why else would you rotate a supercharger 90° and drive it off a helical gear? For aero benefits.

Depends on what you mean by efficient. Superchargers are the thing that bleed power from the crank. AFAIK turbochargers are more efficient in terms of gas mileage. I am not sure about other types of efficiency.
Clutch your supercharger and it has no parasitic draw.
